Today's Share: Jill Martin's Breast Cancer Diagnosis Journey and the Life-Changing Genetic Test
In June 2023, a sudden phone call completely turned Jill Martin's peaceful life upside down. As a senior writer for "The Today Show," Martin had undergone a genetic test a few weeks prior to assess her cancer risk. Despite recent breast ultrasound and mammography results showing no abnormalities, her doctor still recommended further investigation.
"When they suggested the genetic test, I agreed without hesitation," Martin revealed to Health magazine. "However, it was that three-minute phone call that drastically altered the course of my life."
The genetic test results revealed that Martin carries the BRCA2 gene mutation, which elevates her lifetime risk of developing breast cancer to over 60%. This discovery was like a ticking time bomb, triggering a series of events that ultimately led to her diagnosis of stage II breast cancer.
Martin lamented, "It was undoubtedly the simplest test I've ever taken, but its outcome was the hardest to bear."
Upon learning that she was BRCA2-positive (a mutation she inherited from her father), Martin had initially planned to undergo a preventive double mastectomy. However, preoperative MRI scans unexpectedly found that despite the normal breast ultrasound and mammography results, she had already developed breast cancer.
Facing this sudden and devastating news, Martin felt fear but also gratitude: "Now, looking back, if I could talk to myself then, I would tell her, 'You're actually lucky because you found out early.'"
After the diagnosis, Martin underwent a double mastectomy, chemotherapy, and breast reconstruction surgery. To reduce the risk of ovarian cancer (which is also increased by the BRCA2 gene mutation), she also chose to have her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed.
The Importance of BRCA Testing and Interpreting the Results
Today, Martin has successfully battled cancer, and she is using her experience to promote genetic testing and raise awareness about breast cancer. She has launched a new brand, By Jill Martin, which features a popular Sherpa hoodie. In collaboration with the NBA and WNBA, she has created a special pink version of the hoodie, with proceeds donated to the Brasser BRCA Center, which is dedicated to research, treatment, and prevention of BRCA-related cancers.
Martin hopes her story will inspire more people to learn about genetic testing and encourage them to discuss with their doctors whether they are suitable for such testing. She emphasizes that genetic testing is not only crucial for individuals but also significant for their families. Although sharing this news with her father and brother was difficult, it was necessary. Now, they undergo regular cancer screenings based on this information.
"Learning that I carry the BRCA gene was a turning point in my life and a call to action," Martin said firmly. "Carrying the BRCA gene is not a small matter; you need to be your own strongest advocate and fight for your rights."
